Mancrushes Revisited.

the First Man-Crush list was the first thing I, Pascal, ever wrote for this website, Saucy Musings. Now, a few months on, with no advertising revenue, I'm getting thousands of views a month, and a surprising amount of hate mail. So without lookingso, let's go back to where it all began, and look back at how my mancrushes have developed.

From the previous list, Toshiro Mifune, Gregory Peck, and John Eales all remain, and will do for the forseeable future.

However, in place of Radike Samo, who is now just looking to play rugby in Japan and then retire, we have the Timani brothers, who are collosal, as can be seen here...
And Sitaleki's girlfriend is a babe [source]

They're big boys, both over 120kg and 200cm. I suppose that's what I'm looking for in a man-crush. they haven't had as much of an impact on the rugby field as I would have liked, but they're both young enough to develop as players.

Also, in place of Dwight Howard, who spent the whole year publicly arguing with his coach, making eyes at other teams before finally settling back with the Magic, and then opting to have surgery instead of help his team through the playoffs, has shown himself to be a butthead of some regard. Instead, because there has to be a basketball player, I'd maybe go with Roy Hibbert, a 7-foot-2 centre for the Indiana Pacers. He's not yet a great player, though he is an all-star, but he's improving rapidly. He also put in a good shift as a guest star in the excellent Parks and Recreation, and that should count for something.
Here he is, rejecting the former man-crush Dwight Howard [source]
I'd also like to add Tadanobu Asano, because he's the balls, and is in nearly every movie ever made. Serious, he was Genghis Khan in that Mongol movie, the Chelsea smile guy in Ichi the Killer, and he managed to make it into both 'Thor' and 'Battleship' with Rihanna, neither of which I will ever see. Who else? I suppose my friend Vidar, but he already knows that.

That's that. Enjoy your weekend.

What cheek do you want me to turn?

"First the army, now marriage? Why do gays want in on all our worst institutions?" source

The following articles refers to attitudes to same-sex marriage, as opposed to the current situation where same-sex couples can enter into civil partnerships. In the U.K. Civil partnerships have a similar legal effect to marriage itself, although it is not officially approved of by the Church as a marriage before God. Great debate has gone on towards allowing same-sex marriages, and this debate has become more prominent after comments by Cardinal O'Brein, the most senior Roman Catholic cleric in the United Kingdom. O'Brein said that the idea of redefining marriage to include homosexuals would "shame the United Kingdom in the eyes of the world." I don't think it would. Here's why:

I think that legalising gay marriage would show the world that the United Kingdom, even under a mean-spirited, over-privileged Prime Minister like Cameron, is still determined to allow everyone the right to marry. Britain is still a reasonably large player on the global scale and this acknowledgement of rights would be important for global development towards genuine equality.

In the same speech O'Brein said that same-sex unions are a "grotesque subversion of a universally accepted human right." I don't think he understands what a universal human right is, because it means a right which applies to all people, including- you guessed it- the gays. This either suggests that he thinks that homosexuals aren't humans, or that "universal human rights" only apply to heterosexuals. Either way, it's perhaps not the best way to show the empathy and compassion which are basic tenants of the Catholic faith. At very least, why someone who has taken a vow of chastity is commenting on sexual habits of others is beyond me. Perhaps he could explain to us how his god made homosexuals in order for you to deprive them of rights and to discriminate against?

Speaking of violation of human rights, I believe that it is a universally accepted right of people to grow up without being sexually assaulted by clergymen. There's a reason why Catholic and altar boy jokes have become cliche, because it has happened all over the world, again, and again and it has been like that for years. Child abuse is only practised by a tiny minority, it's not a tenant of the religion, and it disgusts most Catholic practisers as it does everyone else, but it does seem like the authorities of the Catholic Church should be the last people to take a moral high ground on homosexual activity.

Anyway, the whole thing came to a head last Sunday, when Roman Catholic churchgoers were read a letter telling them that "they have a duty" to ensure that same sex-marriage does not happen. It wasn't read out in every church service throughout the land, though it seems to have been read by a majority. The writers of this epistle, which is at very least intolerant, and at worst homophobic, were Archbishops Vincent Nichols and Peter Smith, two men who have now dedicated their working lives to sharing their opposition to homosexual marriage.

You might think that there are bigger things for the church to worry about, not least the ongoing sex scandals which still crop up from time to time. This sentiment was also hinted at by Ben Summerskill of Stonewall, who stated "it's a shame Catholic church leaders are so deeply opposed to a 21st-century balance of rights that they're not reading out letters about serious issues such as the AIDS crisis in Africa or the 2.5 million people who live in poverty in this country" - While there are undoubtedly progressive parishes where these issues, and others like them, have been made manifest, it is notable that the central powers of the Church seem to be most interested stimying homosexual marriage. Instead of encouraging priests to preach about charity, compassion and empathy, they are encouraged to preach bigotry and discrimination.

Nichols and Smith are the last people anyone should be listening to. When even more religious nations than the United Kingdom, notably Argentina, have legalised Gay Marriage, and when even a Conservative Government is making strides towards homosexual marriage, it would appear that the battle is lost. Ill-thought out attacks on homosexuals by O'Brein will only help swing public opinion further away from the Church. This disrespects the five million practisers of Catholicism in the U.K. The vast majority of Catholics in this country are doing good, charitable, responsible work and deeds, who tolerate and empathise with the small majority of the population who are gay and want to get married.

My Top Five Man Crushes

My 5 top man-crushes: do I need explain any more? I love the ladies, but there are some men who leave me nothing but a giggling mess. Here are the top five (all are ranked in their prime, as I'm pretty sure at least two are now dead)

5. Gregory Peck
A great actor, a handsome dude, and a selfless human being. A long time supporter of various rights, when it would have been easier for him to have just complained about there being a handsome man in his mirror. Here he is, trying not to scowl at that awful woman in the interminable 'Roman Holiday.'

Also, was in some good movies, not least of all ‘The Omen’ and the original ‘Cape Fear’ and everyone's favourite movie about racism where the black guy still goes to jail but the white guys feel good about themselves, To Kill A Mockingbird. A good choice for a man-crush. Crush Factor ***

4. John Eales
A truly great bloke. Tall and handsome, and one of very few men on earth to win two rugby world cups. Here he is with one, complete with exhausted smile.

A great Wallaby leader, kicker and smart too. This last fact is especially amazing when you consider he is from Queensland, a state famed for its hatred of knowledge. A strident advocate for equality, he was also a staunch supporter in favour of removing the Monarchy in Australia (which failed) and continues to write great rugby-related articles for websites such as the SMH. - Crush Factor *** 1/2

3. Dwight Howard
From watching NBA matches, and listening to the commentary, it appears that I’m not the only man to harbour a crush on this gigantic adonis. Each sentence used to describe him seems to be more homo-erotic than the last, and why not? He is a seven-foot-tall-chocolate-god. What is also fun is that he is a 'devout Christian,' which in America means 'homophobic', so he would hate being part of this list, despite posing in pictures like this:
From the 'hand on hip + blue arm warmer' series
A good, although not yet a great player, he is impressive a rebounder as he is a physical specimen. N.B. That may be the gayest sentence I’ve written so far, and I’m only up to number three. - Crush Factor ****

2. Toshiro Mifune
A powerful actor, and a much under-rated one too, appearing in not only some of the best Japanese movies of all time but some of the best movies of all time. Famous (rightly) for his Kurosawa Samurai movies, he was also a serious actor in contemporary movies, such as they 'High and Low,' 'I Live in Fear' and 'Drunken Angel.'
From the 'scowling in side profile' series.
These are only his Kurosawa movies, he was in 'Battle in the Pacific,' the Samurai Trilogy and showcased his comic skills in 'The Rickshaw Man'. However, I admit it's best to forget Steven Spielberg's '1941.' A good looking bloke also; awful as it is to say, the woman in Rashomon traded up when she was (possibly) seduce-raped by him. Crush Factor - ****1/2

1. Radike Samo
Absolutely number one. Not only a massive beast, with excellent hair, but he’s incredibly quick, the only Australian to win a Super competition with two different teams, and the oldest ever person to pull on a Wallabies jumper (professionally). Despite being nearly forty, do you think you could take him?

To top it all off, he seems, by all accounts, to be a consummate professional, and a top bloke; I’m just gonna say this, but I’d let him have me. Crush Factor - ***** (teenage girl at Twilight premier level)

Bubbling under: Johnny Depp, who would be here, but isn’t ageing well; The guy from ‘The Man who stole the sun’; Drew Mitchell; Imran Khan; That guy from Trick the movie 2.

Sober conclusion: not only gay, but mega-gay (or megay) into tall men, and definitely not a racist!
