Try to pay attention

Just a quick one here. It's about a point of grammar. I'm well aware that spelling, punctuation and grammar aren't my strong points, but this one thing in particular has been driving me insane.

You don't TRY AND do something, you TRY TO do something. It's pretty easy, you would think, to correct; saying 'try and' is sloppy. This seems to effect British shows and conversation mainly; I'm yet to notice it on American shows or conversations with Australians. I can only suppose that it's this lack of grammatical effort which led to the downfall of the British Empire. Make the effort Britain.
